Talavera (2): on class reunions and high school classmates

Class reunion graphicsThe very thought of a high school class reunion makes us feel nostalgic and think about “the good old days.”  That expression, come to think of it, reminds us too that we are getting old.   But we don’t seem to mind it as we reminisce about our old school days or fondly remember our school pranks.

Class reunions are the perfect opportunity for former classmates to revisit their past, swap stories of their youth and update each other on what has happened since they went their separate ways.

Class reunions also do funny things to people.  Women find out to their chagrin that gravity has taken its toll on their bodies.  Guys suddenly become conscious that they have to stoop down real low in order to read the groaning bathroom scale under their feet.

I completed my secondary education at what was then called Talavera Provincial High School (now Talavera National High School) in my hometown of Talavera, Nueva Ecija.  Pop arts writers and chroniclers love to date my high school days as “The British Invasion,” referring to a phenomenon that occured in the mid-1960s when rock and pop bands from the United Kingdom, led by The Beatles, dominated the music scene in the United States and just about elsewhere, the Philippines included.  Boy, did we really rock and roll and jam to the sweet music of those long-haired, guitar-shredding rockers from U.K. — to the annoyance and constant reminders of our elders to turn down the volume of the radio set.  Now you know how ancient I am.

Reunion planning session at Max's Restaurant in Cabanatuan CityGoing back to reunions, I had not once attended our high school class reunions since my former classmates started organizing and holding them, partly because they could not locate me, but mostly because my slavery activity in Manila called job occupied much of my time.  That was before my former classmates Norma dela Cruz-Lipata, Edda Monje-Ramos, Recy dela Cruz and Primo Capulong traced me through my relatives in Talavera and convinced me to organize our 2003 class reunion.  I had no reason to disappoint them except for physical time, and so I accepted the task.  We all agreed on the date, venue and programme of the planned reunion and our individual assignments.  And then I plunged headlong into the nitty gritty of organizing a memorable class reunion in the province through the wonders of computer, mobile phone and the Internet.

Fast forward to several months later.  In the morning of December 6, 2003 some 40 of my former high school classmates were greeted by blaring music of the mid-1960s as they entered the festive and Christmassy atmosphere inside the main reception hall of Venus Resort in Brgy. Calipahan, Talavera, Nueva Ecija.  Many came with their spouses, children and grandchildren too. And I embarrassed myself for failing to recognize some of them as I welcomed them at the entrance to the hall.  But I bet some of them mistook me too for the doorman of the venue.

Norma, a well respected school teacher in Manila, acted as master of ceremonies, and she showed us why she graduated with first honors in our high school class with her superb handling and management of the reunion’s programme and activities.

On my personal invitation, our former teachers Mrs. Lilia Arenas-Hernandez and Mr. Francisco Hilario graced the occassion and keynoted the reunion’s programme.  It was good to see them both alive and well and still active in their retirement.  We presented each of them with a plaque of our profound appreciation of their guidance and contributions to our high school education.

Venue of 2003 class reunion, the main reception hall of Venus Resort in Talavera, Nueva Ecija.Mario dela Fuente who made it big in the construction business motored from his home in Isabela province and reunited with his former classmates.  Sydney-based Gil Santos who was vacationing at that time attended the reunion too, so did Gloria Sanvicente-Maccarone who flew in all the way from Canada with her husband Tom.  Manuel Victoria promptly renewed his old dancing days with Gloria to the amusement of his former classmates and mixed reactions from his family members.

Tom would later reenter the hall fully garbed in Santa Claus costume and laughing ho! ho! ho! as he distributed confectioneries to the children and gamely posed with them for souvenir photos.  And he stole the limelight from everyone else as doting mothers and grandmothers took turns in sitting their child or grandchild on Tom’s lap and clicked away at their cameras.

Hometown politician Neri Santos dropped by the reunion around lunch time and pumped hands after donating two boxes of door prizes.  He made the rounds of reunion participants accompanied by his friend and our class salutatorian Manny Palomo.  Neri would later become a three-term mayor of Talavera.

The fun part of the reunion came after the sumptous buffet lunch served by Venus Resort.  Watching the riotous parlor games and raffle of door prizes, I came to realize that a class reunion is more than a fellowship among former classmates.  It too is a big family reunion of unrelated people whose only kinship is a shared education in the distant past.

Inspired by the news and photos of the reunion, my former classmates who immigrated to North America (Esther Salamanca-Rosal, Liza Tumibay-Empensando, Elsie Fajardo-Paez, Becky Angeles-Tamber, Cely Ramon, Gloria Sanvicente-Maccarone, Lito Aclan, Chino dela Torre and Llorente Aclan) also held their own three-day mini reunion in Ontario, Canada.  Esther, Elsie and Gloria alternated in hosting small parties at their respective houses for three consecutive days.  They sent me photos and a video record of their reunion which I played on a large-display screen during our class reunion later that year.

For the following year’s reunion, Bert de Vera suggested that we move its date to December 30 to give Elsie (who was arriving on the 28th from Canada) a chance to join us, and I transferred its venue to Trizone Karaoke Bar in Brgy. Maestrang Kikay, Talavera, Nueva Ecija.  Drawing from our experience the previous year, the reunion was even more successful and enjoyable to all its attendees.  Foods and drinks catered by Trizone and supervised by Alice de Guzman were plentiful too.

Elsie who was visiting her folks in Elsie (middle of photo) in this photo of the class reunion at Trizone Karaoke Bar in Talavera, Nueva EcijaAliaga, Nueva Ecija at that time made it to the reunion and she immediately drew the attention and interest of her former classmates.  She looked lovely and elegant as ever and was the darling of the reunion.

Lydia Gabayno-Pineda and her fellow school teachers Mila Carlos-Eser and Nenita Villa Agustin-Corpuz presided over the parlor games and raffle of door prizes.  It was amusing to watch them manage and control the riotous parlor games as they would their own unwieldy elementary classes, barking instructions and orders to both young and old participants with a smile.

Bert proposed before the reunion wrapped up that we meet every 6 months “since we don’t have many years left to live.”  I still get goose bumps when I recall the incident.  In what could have been a premonition of his impending death, Bert succumbed to a heart attack 4 years later.  Before him a number of my former classmates had also passed away too soon — Raffy Santos, Chino dela Torre, Recy dela Cruz, Nelia Viterbo, Cosme Pineda, Elpidio Eblacas, Perla Aquino-Domingo, Corazon Manuel, Consuelo Moraleda, Ernesto Custodio, Leandro Ferry, Julian Hilario, Benedicto Roque, Danilo Garcia, Edgardo Salazar, Ricardo Santos, Virgilio Punzal, Tomas Torres and Florencio dela Cruz.  We miss them and include them in the opening prayers of our reunions.  May God bless their souls!

In January the following year Lito Aclan of Vancouver, Canada and Honolulu-based Flor Concepcion-Vite flew in for their vacation with their respective folks.  I arranged a weekend class picnic for them at Sarmiento Resort in Brgy. Poblacion Sur, Talavera, Nueva Ecija.  Thanks to the splendid preparations made by Paque Bernardo and Ode Punzal, the picnic grounds resembled a mini barrio fiesta with roasting pork lechon and a long table of home-cooked native dishes and sweets, providing Lito and Flor with a rural feast setting for revisiting their high school days in the company and camaraderie of their former classmates.

Lito added a few pounds to his frame and lost none of his high school humor and spirited nature as he entertained his former classmates with rib-tickling jokes and funny situations.  Flor was an instant hit too during the picnic with her Madonna-like outfit and bubbly personality.

Then incumbent Talavera mayor Lito Fausto and his wife graced the picnic on my invitation through Oca Balajadia and Ogie Santiago.

Cely addressing her classmates during thre welcome lunch for her and Esther at Trizone Karaoke Bar in Talavera, Nueva EcijaThe following month Esther Salamanca-Rosal and Cely Ramon arrived from Canada, within days of each other, and they both invited me to family dinner at their respective ancestral houses in Talavera.  I returned their wonderful gestures with a weekend welcome lunch for them at the function room of Trizone.  Cely was overcome with emotion and her voice faltered as she was addressing her former classmates.  Seeing many of them for the first time since she immigrated to Canada many years earlier must have filled her heart with overwhelming joy which we all experience upon meeting a long lost dear friend or kin.   Esther consoled her as she choked on her words.  And when she finished her message, she was greeted by wild applause and light-hearted teases from her cheering classmates.  I had never felt so good about the inherent nature of reunion to celebrate life whenever and wherever it is held.

We had many more reunions and smaller gatherings since then, like Elsie’s dinner party at Greenland Hotel in Cabanatuan City, Lito’s thanksgiving dinner at his new house in Papaya, Nueva Ecija, Bert’s “stag party” at his fishpond in Brgy. Collado, and Becky’s New Year’s eve dinner at her new house in Talavera.  Each one of them leaves a lasting impression on me because those rare and happy occassions represent brief but memorable encounters with the people who made my younger years worth remembering and revisiting.

In spite of its much ballyhooed online reunion, Facebook cannot substitute for good old, face-to-face class reunions.  And in these my sunset years, I still look forward to breaking bread and cracking jokes with my high school classmates.
